The Attack on Pearl Harbor
The Attack on Pearl Harbor was one of the many events that had led to the United States' involvement in World War II. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, who was the commander of the Japanese Combined Fleet, and General Minoru Genda, had made preparations and had come up with the ideas and strategies that they were to use against the United States during their surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Their ideas were introduced to the Japanese Naval General Staff, who decided to go ahead and authorize their plan. Hirohito also expressed his approval for the plan, though he was very cautious and was ready to cancel the attack if current negotiations with the United States were to end up and work out. On the first of December, Hirohito decided that their relationship with the United States would not improve, and he allowed them to proceed with the attack.
Admiral Yamamoto was the one in charge of carrying out the attack. The main carriers that they used went by these names: Akagi, Hiryu, Kaga, Shokaku, Soryu, and Zuikaku. In addition to these six carriers, they had twenty-four warships which were controlled by Vice Admiral Chuichi Nagumo.
Vice Admiral Nagumo initiated the plan in the morning of the seventh of December. Because the attack on Pearl Harbor was unexpected, the Americans were very unprepared. Early on in the attack, the Japanese were successful in hitting seven of the eight targeted American battleships.
After learning about the attack that had taken place and finding out that they had lost both American lives and American battleships in the attack, the people of the United States were furious with the Japanese. Because, during the time, they were in the middle of talking about a peace alliance, they had not at all been expecting this attack. In addition, they hadn't been notified of Japan's decision to call off and put an end to talks of forming an alliance until after the attack was carried out. This led to an immediate declaration of war on Japan, and finally, the United States of America officially became involved in World War II.
