Women's Roles in the War
Women had very important roles in the war efforts. Some worked men's jobs while the men fought in the war. Others worked in factories making bombs, bullets, and ships to help win the war. War nurses were a popular job for women during these times. As men came back from the war, women had to give up their jobs in order for there to be enough jobs for the returning men, even if they didn't want to. Most women went back to being housewives, and even the women who did not want to go back and leave their jobs had to. Even though they were a big part in the help to winning the war, they weren't acknowledged that much for the work they did. Ladies that didn't want to be nurses stayed at home and helped the war a safe distance away. Women and children did their part to contribute to the war efforts, by buying war bonds for Christmas gifts, growing their own foods in victory gardens, putting together care packages for soldiers, and canned vegetables and fruits for the winter. With the help of women and children back at home they provided the men in the war with enough food, clothing, and fire power to eventually beat the Germans.
